A new information system will allow Kenyan livestock traders and farmers access to daily information on selected markets countrywide through a short messaging service (SMS) and the Internet.
The National Livestock Marketing Information System is aimed at improving access to market chains and the provision of national market information to producers and traders. "Producers and traders want to know the prevailing prices in various markets so that they are able to make decisions that will enable them get the best prices for their products," said Livestock and Fisheries minister Joseph Munyao during the launch.
The system is a joint initiative by the ministry and the Livestock Information Network and Knowledge System (LINKS), and will train data monitors from 25 key markets. The move is expected to help farmers and dealers get better prices by keeping them in touch with the market.
